My GPS is jumping around and slow to get a consistent position, what can I do?
On the directions page, you have an option navigate using Google Maps and then to confirm you have arrived and would like to solve the clue.
Generally GPS works fine on most phones. Its not quite as accurate as we´d like to believe though with variations between phones of around 10 meters being quite common. This is one of the reasons we only try to navigate you to approximately the correct location in the Adventure Hunt app.
One exception to navigation accuracy is google maps, which use additional information, such as what wifi signals can your phone detect and what strength are they, to determine your location. This is why, when the phone won´t provide our app with an accurate location that we suggest using google maps to navigate.
It is also common for phones from remote countries to take a lot longer to get a location fix. This is because it takes a phone some time to learn where to look for the satélites and the rescanning process is quite slow. The solution is just to leave any navigation program running for as long as possible, ideally with internet access, and your phone will learn its new surroundings and get faster fixes.
GPS isn´t perfect - why?
This question has a simple answer and a more complicated one.
The Short Answer
The short answer is that it depends on the device and the location – some phones get a GPS signal better than others, and there is a large range of accuracy, while narrow streets and high buildings also impact the accuracy and speed that we get a reading. The longer answer is below, if you´d really like to understand how all of this works.
The long answer
Our app – like all others that use location – simply asks the phone to give it the current position. We start the “Get location” service and then subscribe to updates. We are able to tell the phone a few key things, like how accurate we´d like etc.
What we then get back is pretty much down to the phone. We record all of the GPS recordings that are sent to our app so that we can resolve any issues and improve things. One important thing this has shown us is that phones vary by up to 10m or so. We regularly see that phones are reporting people as walking through buildings, which we can be fairly sure isn´t actually happening! This is the main reason we say “You have arrived” when you are within 10-15m, to avoid some people passing by a location without ever arriving.
Apps like Google Maps do a lot of processing on the location your phone reports – when you are walking they modify your location to where they think you are most likely to actually be, and the same when you are driving. Because with Adventure Hunt you are exploring areas, we can´t really do that, so we have to rely on the location we are given.
Taking all of this into account, we try to ensure we give directions that get you to the right location even when the GPS isn´t perfect. We want you to be walking around with your head up, enjoying your surroundings rather than watching a dot on your phone. the GPS is a guide rather than.
But when you get stuck finding a location, there is a directions help option which allows you to jump out of the app to Google maps and move to the location. There is also an option to “I have arrived” even when the app thinks you are further away than the required distance. You are never left “stuck”, unable to progress.
We hope that helps explain it. Please don´t take this as excuse or an attempt to blame a device – we fully acknowledge that getting groups to the desired location is 100% our job. This is just a bit more of a detailed explanation of what all is going on.
