El Retiro Escape Room Experience

El Retiro Adventure Hunt is a new outdoor escape room – a fun way to explore, enjoy a stroll, and have some fun in El Retiro. Only 19.50€ per group.

Adventure Hunt is a self-guided outdoor escape room through the historic paths and gardens of El Retiro Park in Madrid. It is a cross between a walking tour, an escape room, and a scavenger hunt. Each puzzle is based on features you will find in plain sight. They might be fountains, statues, monuments, palaces, gardens, information boards, or architectural details. The questions are designed to make you think and pay attention, making for a fun group activity. Unlike a traditional walking tour, the puzzles encourage you to notice details that most visitors would simply walk past. Book online then start whenever you like. There are no guides or fixed departure times. Available in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch, with each booking covering a group of up to six people.

The Adventure Hunt app guides you between puzzles without simply asking you to follow a dot on a map, making the journey itself part of the adventure. The app runs on your own Android or iPhone, so there is no need to collect equipment or meet a guide before you start.

Explore entirely at your own pace. Stop whenever you like for a drink, a meal or to admire the sights, then continue whenever you're ready—even the next day if you wish. Hints are available for every puzzle, so you can always continue your adventure.

This Adventure Hunt takes place in the heart of El Retiro, Madrid's most iconic park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route starts near the Puerta de Alcalá and passes by many of the park's most popular and interesting locations, including the Estanque Grande (Great Lake), Monumento a Alfonso XII, Palacio de Cristal, Palacio de Velázquez, Fuente de los Galápagos, and the monument of the Sphinxes. The route is circular so you end where you started, it crosses through tree-lined paths, gardens, and open areas and covers roughly 2 km and consists of 20 clues. The paths wind through nature-filled promenades, landscaped gardens, and lakes, offering a scenic and varied route that keeps the adventure engaging from start to finish.

Adventure Hunt is ideal for friends, couples, families or colleagues. It is a great way to spend 1.5 to 2 hours – or longer if you stop along the way. Bring water, maybe a snack, and enjoy the journey at your own pace. If you prefer to enjoy some local foods or refreshments along the way, there are kiosks and restaurants along the route. To make sure everyone is engaged, we suggest groups of 2 to 4 participants. If your group is larger, split into smaller teams for a fun, friendly competition. Gather your friends or family, challenge your minds, and discover El Retiro in a brand new way. Adventure is waiting! Are you ready?

We also have Adventure Hunts in other cities across Spain and Portugal. Be sure to follow Adventure Hunt on Facebook or Instagram to stay informed.

El Retiro FAQ

Is Adventure Hunt El Retiro a walking tour?

Adventure Hunt El Retiro is a walking tour with a difference. If you want to explore Madrid’s famous El Retiro Park independently, see many of its best-known sights and discover some of the smaller details along the way, Adventure Hunt is a great option. You have complete flexibility to stop at the different monuments, gardens and points of interest for as long as you like.

You will also have puzzles to solve throughout the route, so the main emphasis is on exploring and having fun rather than providing an in-depth guided history of the park. If you prefer detailed historical commentary or a live guide, then a traditional walking tour may be a better choice.

Is the El Retiro escape room experience suitable for families?

Yes. Adventure Hunt El Retiro is a great activity for families. The route takes place entirely outdoors in El Retiro Park, with puzzles based on the monuments, gardens, fountains and other features you discover along the way. You can complete it entirely at your own pace and stop whenever you like.

Is the El Retiro Adventure Hunt an escape room?

Adventure Hunt El Retiro is not a traditional indoor escape room, but it uses similar puzzle solving, observation and teamwork. Instead of being locked in a room, you explore El Retiro Park and use real features around you to solve the challenges. There is no race against the clock, so you can enjoy the park and take breaks whenever you like.

Are the clues complicated?

This is a really difficult question! What we can say is that out of the 10 initial test groups, no single clue was found to be difficult by all groups.  Every group did find a couple to be quite challenging, but they were almost always different clues from the other groups.

So we can assure you that you are not faced with any impossible puzzles.

How do I win?

Having fun is winning so there is no need to be too focused on the score.   That said, Adventure Hunt has a scoring system, with each clue offering a maximum of 20 points.  Collect as many points as you do your Adventure Hunt and compete with friends and other groups.

Can we compete against another group?

Live scores are available within the Adventure Hunt App. You will be able to see the scores of everyone doing the same hunt as you on the Clue Completed page. We encourage a 10-minute break between groups.

Please contact us if you have multiple groups. We can put up a specific configuration so that all of your groups can start on separate clues at the same time.

About El Retiro

El Retiro is one of Madrid’s best-known and most beautiful green spaces, right in the heart of the city. Once reserved for the Spanish monarchy, the park is now a favourite place for both locals and visitors to walk, relax and escape the busy streets of central Madrid.

Covering more than 100 hectares, El Retiro is much more than simply a park. Its paths lead between landscaped gardens, tree-lined avenues, fountains, monuments and historic buildings, with plenty of interesting details to discover along the way.

One of its most recognisable sights is the large lake, the Estanque Grande, overlooked by the impressive monument to Alfonso XII. Elsewhere in the park you can find the Palacio de Cristal, ornamental gardens, sculptures and some unusual features that are easy to miss if you simply follow the main paths.

El Retiro was originally developed as part of the Buen Retiro palace complex in the 17th century. It became a public park in the 19th century and today forms part of the UNESCO-listed Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro, a Landscape of Arts and Sciences.

Its combination of history, architecture, nature and public art makes El Retiro particularly well suited to an Adventure Hunt. Instead of simply walking through the park, the puzzles encourage you to look more closely at the monuments, buildings and smaller details around you as you explore.
